# Fractions

Definition: A fraction is a way of writing "the number pieces we have of something divided".        The fraction: \frac{2}{3} says we have 2 pieces of a thing divided into 3 pieces.        The fraction: \frac{1}{7} says we have 1 piece of a thing divided into 7 pieces. Name: The number above the fraction line is called the numerator. Notes The numerator "numerates the number" - tells the number of pieces.   The bigger the numerator, the more pieces you have. Name: The number under the fraction line is called the denominator. Notes The denominator "denominates the division" - tells the division of a thing. The bigger the denominator the smaller the pieces so \frac{2}{5}< \frac{2}{3} \frac{2}{3} means we have 2 pieces of a thing divided into 3 pieces and \frac{2}{5} means we have 2 pieces of a thing divided into 5 pieces.
Important Rules: If numerator = denominator, you have all of the pieces so you have the whole thing.        So, \frac{7}{7}=1 and \frac{645}{645}=1 . If numerator = 0, you have no pieces. That means you have nothing - no matter the denominator.        So, \frac{0}{2}=0 and \frac{0}{123}=0 .
